PhD Position Available

We have a PhD position available in the context of the project Eyes4ICU. The topic is “Gaze Behaviour Analysis for Early Diagnosis and Monitoring of Autism”.

If you are highly motivated and capable of addressing and solving scientifically challenging problems, and if you are interested in doing research in an internationally oriented and highly successful team, you should apply! Please submit your complete application as detailed below.

HiWi Position available -- Action-aware diffusion models for procedure planning in instructional videos

Task: Analysis of the performance the action-aware diffusion model for procedure planning in instructional videos.

Requirements: Strong programming skills in Python and Pytorch. Good knowledge in deep learning and experience in training DNNs.

Preferable: Knowledge in diffusion models.

Contact: Lei Shi (lei.shi@vis.uni-stuttgart.de)

HiWi Position available -- 3D Computer Vision

Task: Work on advanced 3D computer vision methods, e.g. NeRF, Triplane representations, 3D Gaussian Splatting.

Requirements: Good intuition, first principle thinking, excellent Python and PyTorch programming skills

Preferable: Strong knowledge in non-deep-learning Computer Vision

Contact: Chuhan Jiao (chuhan.jiao@vis.uni-stuttgart.de)

HiWi Position available -- Deep Learning Approaches for Theory of Mind

Task: Work on modelling Theory of Mind, implementing deep learning methods and performing different kind of analysis.

Requirements: Good intuition, first principle thinking, excellent Python and PyTorch programming skills

Contact: Matteo Bortoletto (matteo.bortoletto@vis.uni-stuttgart.de)

HiWi Position available -- Deep Multi Agent Reinforcement Learning

Task: Implement, train and evaluate agents that can cooperate in mutli-agent environments (for example based on games like Overcooked). Tasks may include testing out new network architectures/algorithms, help with the evaluation of agents, run user studies in human-AI cooperation settings, etc.

Requirements: Good intuition, first principle thinking, excellent Python and PyTorch programming skills (JAX skills also appreciated)

Preferable: Strong experience with reinforcement learning.

Contact: Constantin Ruhdorfer (constantin.ruhdorfer@vis.uni-stuttgart.de)

HiWi Position available -- Web Interface for Annotation Workflow

Task: Implement a web interface for the annotation of populism in sentences of parliamentary speeches. As the concept of populism is fuzzy, we need an interface that allows annotators to discuss in a live chat, and an interface for an expert evaluation of the annotations and discussions.

Requirements: Strong programming skills in Web development, preferably using Django and HTMX

Contact: Susanne Hindennach (susanne.hindennach@vis.uni-stuttgart.de) and Lukas Erhard (lukas.erhard@sowi.uni-stuttgart.de)

Postdocs/PhD students

We are always looking for outstanding postdoctoral researchers and prospective PhD students that have an interest in our research. Our research spans 1) human-computer interaction/information visualisation, particularly design and evaluation of interaction techniques and adaptive information visualisations, user interface and user experience design, empirical evaluation of interactive systems, 2) applied machine learning, particularly deep and recurrent neural networks, generative models, (inverse) reinforcement learning, visual question answering, captioning, cognitive modelling, or 3) computer vision or graphics, particularly 3D graphical (face, hand, body) modelling, egocentric vision, scene understanding, pose estimation, object detection/recognition. You will find information about current projects on our webpages. Maybe you even have your own exciting research project in mind that you could pursue here? There is always room for new ideas and projects and we are happy to discuss them with you.

A strong interest in applying computational methods to human-computer interaction, for example intelligent user interfaces, is required. Excellent programming skills are expected. Previous experience with Python, TensorFlow, or CUDA is an advantage. Strong team working and critical thinking skills, aptitude for independent and creative work, as well as fluent English written and presentation skills are essential.

Positions are fully funded (100%) and are available to applicants of any nationality. You will contribute to the leadership of ongoing projects, will have the opportunity to advise undergraduate and graduate students, and contribute to the teaching activities of the group.

If you are highly motivated and capable of addressing and solving scientifically difficult problems and if you are interested in doing research in an internationally oriented and highly successful team, you should send your application to .

Please include the following information in your application (preferably in a single pdf document):

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Cover letter
  • Research statement
  • Full publication list
  • List of at least two referees
  • Postdoc applicants: Your own three most interesting research papers (if allowed by publisher, links otherwise)
  • PhDs applicants: Your own most interesting research paper (if allowed/applicable)
  • Only PhD applicants: transcripts of bachelor/master program

Alexander von Humboldt Foundation

Humboldt Research Fellowship for Postdoctoral Researchers

As a Humboldt alumnus, Prof. Bulling is eligible to host excellent postdoctoral researchers for up to 2 years through a Humboldt Research Fellowship. If you are interested in applying for such a fellowship with his support, please apply with the information described above and clearly indicate your interest in the fellowship in your cover letter.

Hiwi/Student research assistant

We frequently have positions for student research assistants (Hiwis) available in our lab. These positions usually involve working closely with our PhD students and PostDocs in one of their ongoing research projects, sometimes leading to co-authorship on their paper. Please note that these positions are only open to students of the University of Stuttgart. If you are interested in joining our group let us know by writing an email to .

Please include the following information in your application (preferably in a single pdf document):
  • Position you are applying for
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Transcripts of bachelor/master program (optional but strongly suggested)

Research Visits and Summer Internships

We are happy to host outstanding PhD students who wish to spend some time in the group.

We also welcome master students who want to gain research experience and contribute to ongoing projects or do their thesis in our group. We generally do not offer summer internships for Bachelor students. The University of Stuttgart is a partner in several exchange programs such as Erasmus+, which enables students from abroad to study in Germany. While we do not provide financial support, there are mobility programs that help with funding (e.g. Erasmus+ Grant). Internships are typically between 3-6 months.

An interest in and/or previous work related to our research interests and topics is required. Write an email to . If you are interested in working with a specific member of our group, you should state that in your email.
